With funding from Start Up Fund Joensuu, startups in the Joensuu region and North Karelia gain access to growth capital, strategic expertise, and valuable business networks.

The fund helps startups:

  • Strengthen management and growth teams
  • Develop business models and growth strategies
  • Enter new domestic and international markets
  • Prepare for future investment rounds and scaling

The fund primarily invests in startups and growth companies working in:

  • Digital technologies and software innovation
  • Forest bioeconomy and sustainable solutions
  • New materials and advanced manufacturing
  • Deep tech and scalable technology businesses

The fund is industry-independent, and companies from other sectors may also qualify.

To be eligible, the company must be located in, planning to establish operations in, or have a significant operational connection to the Joensuu region or North Karelia.

  • Fund size: €2.5 million
  • Typical investment: €50,000–€200,000

Beyond capital, portfolio companies gain access to Business Joensuu’s Startup Accelerator, international growth services, expert mentoring, and investor networks.

North Karelia Growth Fund

In addition to Start Up Fund Joensuu, startups can also access support through the North Karelia Growth Fund, focused on early-stage and high-growth companies planning international expansion.

Investment sectors include:

  • Digitalization
  • Forest and bioeconomy
  • Photonics
  • Tourism and creative industries
  • Materials science

Typical first-round investments range from €25,000 to €150,000, with follow-on investments up to €500,000.
