Environmental permit for the synthetic methanol production plant in Joensuu legally binding

The environmental permit for P2X Solutions’ planned synthetic methanol production plant in Joensuu has become legally binding. The Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland granted the environmental permit for the project on December 15, 2025, and no appeals were filed with the Vaasa Administrative Court during the appeal period.

“The legally binding environmental permit is a significant step forward for our Joensuu project. This provides a solid foundation for proceeding with the preparation of the investment decision,” says Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions.

The Joensuu plant is set to produce green hydrogen and further process it into synthetic methanol with an annual capacity of 33,000 tonnes. The methanol production will utilize carbon dioxide captured from local production plants, including the power plant of Savon Voima.

“Synthetic methanol helps the transport and industrial sectors achieve significant emission reductions. We anticipate demand for the Joensuu methanol especially from the maritime and aviation industries,” Plit explains.

P2X Solutions’ plant will be located next to Savon Voima’s power plant in the Kontiosuo industrial area in Joensuu. The heat generated during the process will be utilized in Joensuu’s district heating network.
