Personalized Maternity Care: The Story of Äitiysfysio Jonna

Years of experience in the wellbeing sector, combined with a strong desire to work in her own way, made entrepreneurship a natural next step for Jonna Joukanen from Joensuu. In spring 2026, she took the leap and established her own business, Äitiysfysio Jonna. Along the way, she received guidance and support from Business Joensuu.
Jonna Joukanen is a qualified physiotherapist, midwife and massage therapist, specialising in maternity and pelvic floor physiotherapy. Over the years, she has gained extensive experience across different areas of healthcare and wellbeing. This diverse professional background inspired her to consider how she could bring all her expertise together under one business.
Above all, Jonna wanted to create a career that reflected her own values and way of working. The support of family and friends, along with encouragement from colleagues, gave her the confidence to take the step into entrepreneurship.
"I want to promote the overall wellbeing of mothers," Jonna summarises.
Personalised Care in a Relaxed and Welcoming Environment

Äitiysfysio Jonna offers a range of services, including maternity and pelvic floor physiotherapy, pregnancy and baby massage, breastfeeding guidance and lymphatic therapy. Since opening, pregnancy massage and maternity physiotherapy have been particularly popular among clients.
For Jonna, providing individual attention and creating a safe, welcoming atmosphere are at the heart of her work. She wants to support her clients through different stages of life and build lasting relationships, from pregnancy through to postpartum recovery and beyond.
Babies are always welcome at appointments, and sessions can be adapted to their needs and routines. Drawing on her expertise as both a physiotherapist and midwife, Jonna can also offer practical guidance on handling babies, breastfeeding positions and ergonomics during feeding.
Although the business name highlights maternity care, its services are not exclusively for expectant or new mothers. Men are also warmly welcome. For example, lymphatic therapy can be used to support scar treatment and help reduce swelling.

Äitiysfysio Jonna is located on Kauppakatu in central Joensuu, in a charming building locally known as Nukketalo. Interestingly, just across the street stands Laulutalo, a historic building that once served as a maternity hospital – a fitting coincidence for a business specialising in maternity wellbeing!
When establishing her business, Jonna made use of Business Joensuu's free business advisory services. The coaching and guidance provided an opportunity to explore the practical aspects of entrepreneurship and how to turn her professional expertise into a sustainable business.
Jonna's story is a great example of how professional expertise, a clear personal vision and the courage to try something new can lead to entrepreneurship. Running her own business allows her to combine skills from different fields while building a career that truly reflects who she is.
Business Joensuu supports entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey – from developing an initial business idea to launching, developing and growing their business.
