Mi-Pe Oy, based in Kitee, has established itself as one of the leading companies specializing in timber transportation and wood chip contracting in the region. The company’s roots trace back to 1976, when Mikko Luukkainen’s father started operations in the wood chip business. Mikko took over the family business in 1992, and Mi-Pe Oy has now been serving its customers for four decades.
Luukkainen sees great potential for entrepreneurship in Kitee but notes that the local business landscape has changed in recent years:
– Entrepreneurial conditions here remain strong, but the region needs more businesses and services to boost its economic vitality. It is essential that entrepreneurs receive support for growth and development.
Mi-Pe Oy is a trusted player in the harvesting of energy wood. The company’s operating area extends from South Savo and South Karelia all the way to North Karelia. Wood chips are delivered to various locations, including Luumäki and Heinävesi. Mi-Pe work closely with Metsä Group, UPM, and other forestry companies. The company has two operational sites in Kitee—one in Puhoksentie and another in Kesälahti.
The end of wood chip imports from Russia has significantly reshaped the industry:
- Many companies have made significant investments in chippers and equipment, which may lead to oversupply in the future. Fortunately, we have strong, long-term customer relationships that bring stability to our operations, says entrepreneur Mikko Luukkainen.
The company has utilized Business Joensuu’s services, particularly for recruitment. A year ago, the company needed new chipper operators and timber truck drivers, and thanks to the collaboration, open positions were quickly filled.
– Business Joensuu helped us draft job advertisements and distribute them across different channels. This significantly sped up the process of finding the right professionals, Mikko says with appreciation.
Last autumn, Mikko planned to participate in Business Joensuu’s Grow² coaching program, but due to work commitments, he was unable to attend.
– It would be beneficial to join the next growth coaching group if scheduling allows, he reflects.
Entrepreneur Mikko Luukkainen from Kitee has been leading Mi-Pe Oy since 1992. The photos in the background illustrate the company's long tradition in timber transport and wood chip production.
Mikko’s son has gradually taken on more responsibility for the company’s wood chip operations, and in the near future, leadership will shift increasingly to the next generation. At the same time, Mikko plans to shorten his workdays, which have long stretched from early morning to late at night.
Mi-Pe Oy is thriving - in 2024, the company employed nearly 15 people and achieved a turnover of over 3 million euros, with a profit of 311,000 euros.
– We have strong customer relationships, a skilled team, and great conditions for growth. Kitee is a good place for entrepreneurship, and there is plenty of room for development here. By working together, entrepreneurs and local stakeholders can strengthen the region’s vitality and open up new opportunities for growth. I look to the future with confidence and believe that there is room for expansion and development in this area, Luukkainen concludes.
